Other People's Places

I love looking at houses, poking around someone else's stuff, looking at their bookcases and in their cabinets. I love the stories a home tells.

There is something intoxicating about getting to snoop around. And while the best buzz does, admittedly, come from covert sneaking, I hate to break rules, so digital house tours are where I get my fix. Well, unless I get invited to stay in my best friend's boyfriend's absolutely incredible Brooklyn apartment. Then I get to snoop around in real life AND with permission.

Geoffrey is a writer (you can buy his novel right here), and his apartment feels exactly how I want a writer's apartment to feel, timeless and layered. His bookcase, which he had built when he bought the place, is filled with great books. So great you sort of get mad at him and want to know where he hides the junk science fiction and cheesy court room dramas. It's all Nabokov and Joyce.

The apartment is cozy and masculine, filled with amazing family heirlooms. Although Sena thought it was a little creepy with the taxidermy bat, antique weapons and a buffalo skull, I left pretty inspired by it, and determined to go buy myself some more lamps and improve on my bitters collection.

Geoffrey could not have been a better host, which might not work to his advantage; he may find a multi-generational pack of women on his doorsteps when he least expects it.

Edit: I forgot to mention that Geoffery was the inspiration for the group set of Christmas pajamas. Who doesn't love a man who loves matching outfits?

  1. Even though our apartment here is teeny tiny, Brandon will catch me with wandering eyes just looking around our place. I like to look around at the bookshelves and window ledge to wonder what someone else would think about us if they saw our place. I remember when LDawg came to visit when I was still in my tiny, pre-furnished studio she commented that even with someone else's furniture, she could tell that this apartment was mine by all the little things in it. And I really liked that. The idea that you can tell by the little trinkets, postcards or odds and ends who the place belongs too...maybe in due part because we have all lived together in the past and probably recognise a lot of them :)

  2. I do the same thing, Chanty. I just look at all my stuff and get really happy. I feel sort of guilty that "stuff" can bring me so much joy, but the stuff is memories, ya know?

    1. Sena will learn that "weird" is a necessary component in good design.
