This Weekend We // Baby Shower For a Baby Sister

This weekend we celebrated Claire and Andrew and the imminent arrival of their son, my nephew, Jeffrey Cotton.  An almost certainly squirrelly little boy we are all certain to fall in love with instantly.

We ate loaded bagels and homemade blueberry muffins (Jan, I need that recipe). People mixed spicy bloody Mary's, though I went the way of the mimosa. My dad's signature Pandora station, seeded almost entirely with singer/ songwriters with prickly voices, played in the background, and I lamented the weather, which was reminiscent of the last shower we threw for Claire, now nearly two years ago.

Although I have a fondness for all female baby showers and the feminine mystique that often shrouds them, I appreciated this celebration of life. A house full of people coming together to let the newest member know he is already loved. He already has a tribe to surround him and protect him. To laugh with him and play with him. To teach him and train him. And there is no lesson more important to instill in this new life than the importance of family.

I can't wait to meet you, Jeffrey Cotton. I can't wait for long days at the beach with you. For sneaking you even a fraction of the treats that your mother has snuck my children. I can't wait to hear your tiny giggles. To watch you take your first tentative steps. I hope to me as good an aunt to you as your mama has been to my children. You are so loved, sweet, strong boy.

Other People's Places // Claire and Andrew's Farmhouse

For the past year I have been trying to get my sister Claire to let me come in and take pictures of the old farmhouse she shares with her husband, his big old chocolate lab, a fat old fat, and a flock of fowl. She always protests. There is always another project she wants complete before I do it. She always wants things a little cleaner. A little more organized. This summer I snapped a few pictures, and then a few more this fall.  There are so many other cozy corners I want to capture for posterity, and maybe soon I will get up there to do just that, but for now, I will share what I have. Because I love that house, and I love that these pictures tell stories of the life they live.

Claire, if you don't like these, you're just going to have to invite me over sometime soon. And when you do, you better make monkey bread.

This Weekend We

After our trip north, I spent a few days recuperating. Bags to unpack. Piles of laundry.  A bit of a cold. Exhaustion from all the aforementioned. Everyday I told my kids that we were going to go to the beach. The light outside my windows beckoned. And yet four days passed with me venturing out very little. I would hear the kids playing beyond the closed windows, but I didn't join in.

Friday afternoon I finally got myself straight. We explored our familiar coastline. We did those things we do every season, crawling over fallen logs, inching across dirty bay sand, wielding sticks as swords, soaking in the air and sun on the bits of expsoed skin.

The next day we drove to Claire and Andrew's to meet a new cousin-in-law, to engage in some old fashion acorn wars, to roam fields, to feed ducks and collect their eggs.

By the time I came home from a mushroom foraging workshop on Sunday, I felt like my reserves had been restored. October had soaked into my core, leaving me with the contentment coupled with nostalgia the season brings.

Farm Mornings

Moments with my family on a farm. Quiet and peaceful, even when life feels like it is anything but. Morning light and baby smiles. A sister who loves her nieces and nephews with her whole heart. A feeling I have only discovered these past few weeks but which has overwhelmed me. Fields of hay. Blooming crepe myrtle. It was as though the landscape took a deep breathe for me and left me feeling just a little lighter.
