Other People's Places -- Geoffery and Joanna's

I like to visit crowded, cluttered houses. Houses full of antiques and memories. Things a bit bizarre, often beautiful. Found. Gifted. Passed down from hand to hand, home to home.

Everywhere you look, your eye finds somewhere novel to land. You ask questions and uncover stories. Those white boxes with clean lines and Scandinavian wood can't hold a drippy candle shoved into a old Chianti bottle to this.

Never have two people's styles merged as perfectly as Joanna and Geoffrey's. Maximalist to their cores.

Gus and The Big Apple

Last week's short jaunt to New York City was Gus's first time. It involved a whole slew of firsts: first tim on a bus, in a cab, on the subway. His first roller coaster, which he was disappointed wasn't alongside his big sister. His first time eating calamari, which he was excited to brag about to his more culinarily adventurous big sister.  In addition to those notable firsts, there was also so much to be learned. It involved the requisite educational component: we spent the afternoon on the Intrepid. While there, he definitely gained some facts, picking up the sort of knowledge that can be gleaned from books but is some much more memorable when accompanied by buttons to push and spaces to explore. His reaction to discovering that the Gemini 3 was nicknamed the Gusmobile was sweet and priceless: "My name's Gus," he announced to me and Joanna, as though that was a fact that might have escaped us.

But the most profound learning occurred outside the realm of the strictly educational. It came through discovering how different the lives of others can be. What it is like to live in small places, to walk  longer distances, to shop in bodegas, to cool off in city fountains. A life full of elevator pressing, cross walks, and public transportation. At dinner in a basement level Italian restaurant, while talking to a grumpy, old Italian man who teased Gusto the brink of his comfort level , I think Gus learned how alike two seemingly different people can be, when the meal ended with sharing photos of their respective fishing triumphs.

I was grateful to spend a few of days with just one child as my main focus. Gus got the chance to take control of more of my attention than usual. While Alamae was there with us, there were enough adults to lighten the load and the trip catered to Gus's whims, giving him the time and space to shine. My heart broke dozens of times each day as I watched my charming blonde boy interact with the people around him, easily talking with adults and children alike. His words warm and genuine. Watching my boy take a new place by storm left me prideful to the point of sin.

This Weekend We- Merhons Take Coney Island

A year ago, my friend Maggie sent me a text telling me about the Coney Island Mermaid Parade. Since that text message, there has been lots of late night bonfire scheming, lots of excitement, lots of image searching and pinning and planning, all leading to a weekend filled with girls and tails and conch shells.

It did not disappoint. We stayed in an Airbnb rental in Bushwick, which was a pretty long hike from Coney Island, but close to friends and cheap, delicious tacos.

We ate donuts (all good stories involve donuts) and sipped coffee on Saturday morning as hair was teased and shimmery green eyeshadow applied. We made the trek across Brooklyn, almost bursting with excitement as we got closer to Coney Island and started to run into more mermaids and parade enthusiasts.

I also fell a little in love with Coney Island, which is so different from the beaches I mostly went to as a kid. It's tacky and raucous and completely fun. I am already scheming more trips.   I want to see the freak shows and ride the rides, eat hot dogs and go back to Gambrinus to feast on lobsters, smoked eels, and baked clams; next time, with my boys in tow.

This Weekend We- Sena's Brooklyn Birthday

This weekend we celebrated Sena's ninth birthday eating our way around New York. The weather was perfect and the apartment we stayed in was beautiful. My girl soaked it all in, never uttering a complaint.  She was her very best self every minute of the trip.

It was a nearly perfect weekend spent with my mom, my daughter, and my best friend with cameo appearances from Geoffrey, who in addition to being an amazingly generous host, is also a damn fine bar tender and egg scrambler.

Of all the pictures I took, my favorite image is one I never captured, an image repeated over and over again-- Sena Rose with her plastic glasses sliding down her nearly nonexistent nose, disposal camera smashed up against her face as she takes pictures of every single plate of food she is served. Every plate. Even the bread.

I love that girl, and I love that she wanted to go to Brooklyn for her birthday, and I love that she smiled for forty-eight hours straight. But I think what I love the most is that she ordered the goat for her dinner.

Seriously, she's awesome.
